Vision and Values

​The school’s values and vision are embodied by our school motto; start small, grow tall.

At Light Years School our ethos is clear; we put the child first in all circumstances. To ensure our pupils are ready to learn, Light Years School has created a school environment which makes pupils feel safe, secure, and supported. We do this by establishing strong and trusted professional relationships and providing pupils with an inviting and accessible environment. By understanding our children and their journeys barriers to learning can be reduced or overcome.


Once pupils feel safe and supported, their learning journey flourishes. At Light Years School, we focus as much on the academic progress as we do on a pupils’ personal, social, and emotional development to ensure they reach their full potential.

Our curriculum is ambitious, exciting and engaging. It is carefully designed to build on prior learning, step by step so that pupils can grow their confidence in learning and their resilience in trying new skills. Our pupils will follow the National Curriculum and teachers will adapt lessons to meet their special educational needs. At Light Years School we see reading as the foundation of all learning and as such, provide specialist support in phonics and the inclusion of reluctant readers.

We adopt approaches that support positive behaviours and attitudes, that are child-centred that teach pupils to develop a toolkit in which they learn how to regulate themselves. We help pupils understand the relationship between their actions and natural consequences so they can make good choices. Pupils are supported to learn and reflect in a supportive environment.

Our curriculum is enriched with activities that we believe all pupils should experience. This supports pupils with their learning and ensures Light Years School develops the whole child. These essential experiences provide the foundation for our personal development curriculum.
