Online Safety
Navigating the digital world can be both exciting and challenging. At Light Years School, we are committed to ensuring that our students have a safe and positive online experience.
Research shows that 53% of 3-4’s are now online, as are 79% of 5-7’s and 94% of 8-11’s (Ofcom). We recognise the limitless advantages that digital devices have for children, provided they are safe and know how to tackle problems, should they arise. We are therefore committed to ensuring that online safety is a whole school approach spanning beyond specific online safety lessons but embedded throughout our whole curriculum, ethos, culture and furthered with strong partnerships with our families and community.
To support children making safe choices in school, we adopt a Light Years Online Safety Code and an acceptable user agreement, these rules are displayed in all classes and children are reminded of them during each computing lesson.
How we can keep children safe online
All children are entitled to be safe whenever they access the Internet. At Light Years School, we take active steps to embed online safety in our curriculum and children’s learning. We also want to help parents and carers improve their own understanding of online safety, so that they can support their children to use the Internet and digital media in a safe and responsible way.
Please look at each section below to find out how we approach online safety in school. We also provide links to easily accessible online safety resources for parents and carers.
Keeping children safe online
Parents are encouraged to work in partnership with the school to teach children about the importance of online safety. Children use the Internet to learn, play, socialise and express themselves. It is a highly creative place and offers a wealth of opportunity. The technology that children use every day may seem daunting to parents and carers, who often worry about the risks children can face online.
Get Safe Online has produced a simple checklist parents can use to help protect children when they are online, and reduce the risks they take.
If Your Child is Aged 6 to 9 - Get Safe Online
If Your Child is Aged 10 to 12 - Get Safe Online
