Mental Health and Wellbeing

Light Years School is committed to eliminating the prejudice and stigma associated with mental health needs by establishing a whole school approach to emotional health and mental wellbeing where mental health is promoted in a positive way rather than seen as a stigma.

Light Years School Mental Health and Wellbeing framework is based around four key elements:

Prevention: creating a safe and happy environment where mental health problems are less likely, improving mental health and wellbeing of the whole school population, and equipping pupils to be resilient so that they can manage the normal stress of life effectively. Teaching pupils about mental wellbeing through the curriculum and reinforcing this teaching through school activities and ethos.

Identification: recognising emerging issues as early and accurately as possible.

Early support: helping pupils/staff to access evidence based early support and interventions.

Access to specialist support: working effectively with external agencies to provide swift access or referrals to specialist support and treatment.

The Good Mental Health Handbook has been developed by Hampshire CAMHS and parents/carers. Within its pages, it contains information, short videos, and workshops to support our children's mental health challenges including anxiety, bereavement, depression, self-harm, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sexuality, substance misuse and trauma.

The Good Mental Health Handbook is a one-stop shop of practical resources, strategies and activities to help the whole family navigate some of the most delicate and sensitive issues facing families today.
