SMSC
At Light Years School, we are deeply committed to fostering the holistic development of our pupils through a robust framework encompassing Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) education. We believe that the development of the whole child is paramount, and we integrate SMSC principles throughout our teaching and school culture.
Our approach to SMSC is primarily delivered through our comprehensive PSHE and RE lessons, complemented by engaging assemblies and enriching whole school curriculum activities. These aspects are meticulously designed to nurture the personal development of each pupil, providing them with a strong foundation in understanding and respecting the fundamental British Values, such as democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect.
The PSHE programme at Light Years School is carefully planned, ensuring that it addresses essential topics relevant to our students’ lives. We embed the Light Years Code throughout our school, which prioritises the opportunity for restorative conversations. This focus on oracy and 'using kind words' is crucial in creating a positive school culture where every child feels valued and understood. As well as this, we have embedded the Thrive curriculum, which is integrated to build vital developmental skills.
We recognise the importance of cultural capital in shaping knowledgeable and informed citizens. Our lessons and initiatives provide pupils with the essential knowledge they need to navigate the world effectively. To enrich their understanding, we host British Values-themed assemblies and facilitate visits to various places of worship, both virtually and in person. Collaborations with Hampshire Library Services serve to promote diversity and inclusion, ensuring our pupils are equipped with broad perspectives. The Junior Leadership Team actively participates in school decisions, amplifying the voices of our students and reinforcing their understanding of democratic principles.
At Light Years School, we are dedicated to creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where every pupil can flourish personally, socially, and academically, embodying the values that underpin our society.
